Annual All-Day + Singing
On
the Saturday before the Fourth Sunday in July, every year, we host the
"Marilou and Don Jolly Memorial All-Day Singing", at the Porter House in
Old Poway Park. The date for 2011 is Saturday July 23. Registration
starts at 9am, singing 10am to 4pm, with a pot-luck Dinner-on-the-Ground
at 12:30pm.
Locals
are encouraged to bring a dish to share. (Kitchen facilities are very
limited. If possible, bring your contribution in a cooler if it needs
to be kept refrigerated before the meal. Also, it is helpful to bring
appropriate serving pieces, marked with your name so you get them
back. There will be an opportunity before the meal for you to set your
contribution out on the tables provided.)
On
Sunday morning, we will also host a 2-hour singing at the Adobe Chapel
in on Conde Street in Old Town San Diego. This venue is a wonderful
"singing room", and well worth visiting (and still have time to get
home, Old Town being quite close to San Diego Airport and the train
station). After the singing, we'll go across the street to Cafe Coyote
for lunch.
Socializing
If you make it to San Diego on Friday
evening, please come to the home of Jerry Schreiber and Carla Smith,
1536 Felton Street, for snacks and fellowship. We'll probably be
putting the finishing touches on our dinner contributions, but we'll be
happy to see you. You can relax after traveling, and meet other
singers.Social activities
on Saturday evening are TBD. There is usually a contra dance at the
Trinity United Methodist Church, at 3030 Thorn Street in North Park,
starts at 8pm (with a learner's session at 7:30pm). Local Hotels
The Poway Country Inn (now
a Best Western) has been a favorite with singers coming to Old Poway
Park. At 13845 Poway Road in Poway, it is only 1.3 miles from the
park itself, about a 25 minute walk.
Other hotels in Poway:
Hampton Inn and Suites San Diego - Poway, 14069 Stowe Drive, Poway. Room rate starts at $126/night.
Ramada Poway San Diego North, 12448 Poway Road, Poway. Room rate starts at $72/night.
San
Diego is, of course, a popular tourist destination, even for non-Sacred
Harp singers. There is a wide selection of hotels and motels
throughout the area. If you have a car at your disposal, you may wish
to stay closer to other attractions (e.g. Old Town San Diego, where our
Sunday morning singing will take place).
Housing with Singers
There
are a limited number of rooms available with local singers. Please
contact Jerry at (619) 544-0432 or DrXOX@cox.net, and we will try to
make suitable arrangements for you.
