Annual All-Day Singing

On the Saturday before the Fourth Sunday in July, every year, we host the "Marilou and Don Jolly Memorial All-Day Singing", at the Porter House in Old Poway Park.  The date for 2010 is Saturday July 24.   Mark your calendar now!

All-California Sacred Harp Singing Convention

One year in 3, singers from around California and across the country gather in San Diego, for two days of hearty singing, on the 3rd Sunday in January and the Saturday before.  [In other years, the Convention is hosted by the Los Angeles group, and then by the groups in the San Francisco Bay area.]  When it's our turn, we've had the good fortune to have the use of the facilities at Old Poway Park, including the Templar's Hall, a beautiful singing space.

The next time we host the Convention will be in January, 2013; the convention will be on January 19-20.   Singing is from 9:30am to 3:30pm both days, with a pot-luck lunch at 12:30pm.  There will be a dinner/social on Saturday night, and also on Saturday evening, an "Alternative" singing, an opportunity to sing music from collections other than the Sacred Harp, 1991 Revision, used during the day-time sessions of the Convention.   For dinner, we will gather at the Hamburger Factory Restaurant, just across the plaza from Templar's Hall in Old Poway Park, at 6pm.   At 7:00pm all who are interested can return to the Templar's Hall for the "Alternative" singing.

If you have a tune you would like to share with other singers, and have a setting in the traditional 4-shape notation used in the Sacred Harp, you can send a digitized copy (.pdf or .tif, for example) to DrXOX@cox.net, or bring a printed copy to the Saturday session of the Convention.   Original compositions are welcome, along with music from other collections using 4-shape notation, or pieces which have been transcribed into this notation.  We will endeavor to copy and collate all the submissions (and some of our own collection) in time for the Alternative Singing.

Local Hotels 

The  Poway Country Inn (now a Best Western) has been a favorite with singers coming to Old Poway Park.   At 13845 Poway Road in Poway, it is only 1.3 miles from the park itself, about a 25 minute walk.  

Other hotels in Poway:

Hampton Inn and Suites San Diego - Poway, 14069 Stowe Drive, Poway.   Room rate starts at $126/night.

Ramada Poway San Diego North, 12448 Poway Road, Poway.  Room rate starts at $72/night.

San Diego is, of course, a popular tourist destination, even for non-Sacred Harp singers.  There is a wide selection of hotels and motels throughout the area.   If you have a car at your disposal, you may wish to stay closer to other attractions (e.g. Old Town San Diego, where our Sunday morning singing will take place).
